Respected artist and teacher Josef Albers was one of several prominent German immigrant artists who left Europe to escape the Nazi regime and left a lasting impact on generations of American artists.  Albers worked as a design educator at the Bauhaus School in Germany before emigrating to the United States to teach at Black Mountain College and Yale University.

Most known for his work in color theory and abstract art, Albers’ signature Homage to the Square series put the study of color at the forefront of modern art considerations.   He knew and worked with famous Abstract Expressionist painters such as Willem de Kooning and post-painterly Pop artists Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg.
